Default Sick and tired of squeeky, squally rear brakes!

I've tried every known pad known to man (or it sure seems like!)...nothing, still squeek/squall.

Tried cleaning the brake assembly...stopped the squeeling and squalling for about 4 months.

Live on a disability check, so buying an aftermarket assembly is pretty much out of the question especially since they start at around $300!

Anyone have any ideas I can try?

It's a 2009 Super Glide, stock everything. The disc is fine, smooth no ridges.

There's some type of grease that you put behind the brake pad to solve this, I can't remember the name. Anyways, be careful not to get grease on the pad surface. I used this stuff a few years ago with good results.

It's called ceramic grease; to be used in small dabs where the brake pad backing plates touch the brake pistons...

Just outta curiosity...are you breaking the pads in when you install them? If they aren't being broken in properly the pads and rotors can get glazing on them which will cause an annoying squealing sound.

Yes. I'm very easy on brakes as I use both the front and rear together - when I use them - but do most of my slowing with engine compression. The squeeling/squalling doesn't start until a few months *after* new pads are installed.

If your very easy on the brakes it sounds as if they are glazing over after a few months. This is very common. The brakes are getting hot but not hot enough to burn of the glazing which occurs from slight usage. I would suggest finding a long stretch of empty road...getting up to 55 and get on the brakes hard. Not too hard as to lock up the brakes but hard enough to get them hot. Slow down to 10 and speed up again..Do this several times (4-5). Once you start smelling the brakes burning, just cruise to get them to cool off again. This should get rid of the glazing that has covered the outer surface area of the pads and rotors. I would also recommend putting brake grease on the backside of the pads and use ceramic as opposed to metallic. Hope this helps. The squealing is from vibration. Air is probably trapping itself between the rotor and the pads. Glazing magnifies this 10 fold.

When mine squeal, I pull em off and deglaze with a piece of sandpaper. Voila! Problem solved for me. FYI: Harley stock pads.

I'll deglaze...one way or another, heh, and see how that works and if I take the pads off to try it that way I'll try the grease also.

Thanks everyone!

sometimes a blast of air and brake cleaner will do the trick.
