I have the gauge and I've done the twist test and managed to do ok both ways. However, I've never quite mastered the technique of checking belt tension while sitting on the bike....
I also used to have trouble checking the tension while sitting on the bike. Then one day I realized you don't have to actually be sitting on it like the manual says. Just stack enough cases of beer on the seat to equal your weight.Once the tension is properly set,you can start drinking the beer while you change the oil and check tire pressure.

I never have that many full cases of beer around.

My '96 RK was to be checked while sitting on the bike, but I never did it that way. OTOH the service manual for the '07 SG says nothing about it. It says the bike should be either on the kickstand or rear tire elevated and on level ground.

I believe weighted versus unweighted is dependent on where the swingarm pivot point is in relation to the transmission pulley.

Out of curiosity, I went to the local dealer's and felt the tension on the drive belt on about a dozen new bikes. There is significant variation, even for different bikes of the same model. Makes me think the whole belt tension issue is being overblown. Either that or the assembly person at my dealer is being very careless.
