Default changing brake pads......lemme get this straight...

i don't have to take off the calipers...?

all i gotta do is use a 10mm-12pt socket, pull the pad retainers, push them back (w/ a putty knife or something), they'll drop out, put the new ones in, rinse, repeat.....!?

btw, i only have 6k on the stockers and have new lyndell pads.

yes, take cover off your brake fluid reseviour so when you push the pads apart, the fluid will come out of the lines.

During use, brake pad material is deposited on the surface of the rotor. If you change pad types, you must remove material before bedding in the new pads. I use a drill motor and 130 grit sand paper on a sanding disc. Getting to the inside of the disc can be a real bear. I havn't tried it yet on these new rotors, but I think it's going to be tough.

Be sure to bed the new pads properly.

I like to remove the caliper from the mount, and use brake parts cleaner to clean all around the piston before pushing it back in. Does that help? I don't know, but it makes me feel better. And I've never had a brake caliper failure. Of course, I've never had an elephant in my backyard, either.

With the master cylinder cap off, you'll want to cover the top or it may shoot brake fluid out of the resevoir onto the floor or bike. I found this out the hard way!

Thankfully the DOT5 fluid won't trash the paint, but it still makes a mess.

How about using a 1/4 - 12 pt to remove the brake pad pins......

10 mm is for the caliper bolts....

Beware that '07 bikes use DOT4 fluid which will ruin paint! Not sure if earlier year models use DOT4 or 5.

Will this procedure work for the rear brake pads for an FLHT?

Wow, sounds surprisingly easy to do this... So front and rear brakes (in my case on an '05 Electra Glide) are both the same? Am i missing something or is it really this easy?

Thanks!

Same pads and same procedure. As mentioned, though, it's a good opportunity to clean the pistons before you push them back into the bores, and on the rear that means wheel removal ifyou want to be thorough.

The stock HD pads deposit a lot of dust. Even though bobcowan has never had an elephant in his backyard, his suggestion is a sound one. Forcing the pistons back into the bore without cleaning them can hurt the piston seals.
