Forward Controls

Forward Controls
First of all I hope this is the right section for this question.
I just recently bought a 1990 Sportster that sat for three years. It's my first bike, but not my first vehicular project. I have been simply dumbfounded by these forward controls. I think that they are installed upside down.

It is impossible to shift unless I just about break my foot.
I took it off and tried to flip it around but the peg is in the way. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks,
J

I can't tell from the angle you took the photos, but it's one of two things. Either the shift lever is too high on the spline shaft or it is the wrong shift lever. For the former, just loosen the attachment bolt, slide it off the spline, and then slide it back on a notch or two lower. I'm not sure, but it looks like you might bump into the peg mount if you do that... which brings us two option 2. I'm used to seeing forward shift arms with an arc in them to clear the peg mount - yours appears to be straight. If that's the problem, go to your local bike flea market. I always see stuff like that there. GL!
