Post Sensitive Throttle

I understand to adjust the throttle sensitivity you have to slide off the boot and turn the screw a bit for adjustment. Is this correct, am I missing a step. The last few bikes I've had the throttle was way to sensitive, I am being told through time the sensitivity would go away or get used to the throttle. Any advice for someone who has had a few spills because of the throttle sensitivity.
Thanks
