Default Return Throttle Cable

Hi Ya'll,
Today I began my stage 1 upgrade. While removing the carb I realized the throttle return cable had way to much slack, like 2 inches of slack. Took the throttle housing apart and sure enough the ball at the end of the cable broke off. My question: Is this cable a safety device or does it serve another purpose ? The carb seems to function fine. My 1000 mile checkup is in 3 weeks. Will I be OK till HD can replace it ? I know cables are expensive, so I really don't want to eat the cost.
Thanks...

I was looking at mine the other day (its an EFI version), and couldn't quite see the point of the return cable, except to be able to shut the throttle off if the return spring broke. Yours seems to prove the point, if its running OK, so I would guess it would be all right to leave it until the service. Ring the dealer and ask them if you're worried.

It's another gooberment mandated safety device. I converted my Sloptail to an internal throttle and it uses only 1 cable. Never had a problem; just take a gander at your return spring every now and again.

My wife's Intruder only has one throttle cable (by design) and it works fine.

Thanks everyone,
I won't sweat over this one. This is the first time I have ever seen a carb return cable. The spring on the carb seems to be a very stout unit. Almost seems impossible for it to break.
Thanks...

I was kinda wondering my self why my new bike had 2 throttle cables.

I used to take the spring off the carb on my old bikes. Makes for a good cruise control.

One problem I have seen with not using a return cable is if the return spring isn't stout, then you can get some throttle sticking. Shouldn't be a problem for you though

I have an S@S superE and I was told that the spring was stout enough for one cable.I have used the same one cable for 6 years now.The cable should snap back firmly when released.

I was told by someone that if it broke you'd be in BIG trouble, go figure. Tim
