Default How much spring in a springer front end

I have a springer front end on an old 60's chopper that doesn't really "spring".. (pretty sure home made, but beautiful springer front end) when I ride, and look at the fork... the fork seems to be taking all the shock, and the springs/rockers are not really doing anything...I took it apart to make sure it's not the rocker bushings. And found The springs are REALLY tight. I can stand on the main spring and it springs 1/2 inch. All 200 lbs of me. Any one know about how much spring the springs should have... AND, can I soften the springs...
They are very rare square or flat stock springs, and i don't want to get a new front end... It's just too classic...

thanks
Bill

I have a 2005 springer classic and I have the service manual. The springs for your springer front end are very rigid and I do not think that you want anything softer and do not think that you will find much different than what you already have. By the service manual it takes a lot of force to compress my springs and they are there to absorb some of the road shock that you get but the rockers are what alows the front end to glide over bumps and road imperfections. Hope this helps. I am not an expert but from riding one for five years and servicing it this seems to be the case.
