Default softail axle covers

Trying to install axle covers on my 05 Fatboy. Part number is 47615-95b. Problem is when you add the bracket thickness behind the adjustment washers ther is no longer enough axle protruding thru to fit thru the left side spacer. In other words, with the cover brackets installed the 3/4 inch part of the axle will never seat into the adjuster washer, therefore the axle is not centered in adjuster and the belt is loose. It's like the kit should have come with thinner axle adjustment washers. The brackets are approx 3/16 of an inch thick. that's 3/8 of an inch spacing on the axle! WHo engineered this crap?

the way they mount "has" to change the axle spacing. It's just like adding two 3/16 washers between the adjuster and swingarm. then the axle comes up short by 3/8 inch. that the way it looks to me anyway.

Your doing something wrong the...you don't adjust the axle at all. You back off the adjuster, insert the bracket and then tighten the adjuster against the bracket. Your axle is already torqued, it won't move if you back off the adjuster.

the brackets go behind the adjustment spacer and are pinched between the swingarm and the spacer. you don't have to touch the adjuster bolt, just loosen the axle nut. check out the instructions on harley's site for part # 47615-95b. you may be thinking of the type that mounts to the adjuster bolt. that is a better idea and i may try to fabricate something like that. thanks

My apologies........That does look messed up.
I've only used the ones where insert the bracket in front of the adjuster.

Kuryakyn has that type...

problem resolved. i did a little fab work on the brackets and made it so they attach to the adjuster bolt. used a 1 1/2 holesaw on the back of the bracket so it strattles the axle adjuster spacer and welded a tab on them so they bolt right to the adjuster bolt. these things aren't going anywhere!!
