Thanks HardLife, I tried the Oreilly and the home improvement stores. not much variety to grit, I will keep on keepin on though...

I just did this and used 600 grit wet or dry only.That coating is pretty tough and took some elbow grease to get through.After the paper I used Noxon metal polish with a scrubby pad.Finished with Mothers billet polish- looks good.

After polishing try POR15 Glisten PC Clearcoat. It's an high solid urethane clear with much higher than normal UV protectants, and excellent adhesion to aluminum. It's a little more effort but will save hours of re-polishing down the road, protect the finish from scratches and chemical corrosion.
