Default Spring direction

In the process of changing my fork oil last night, I pulled the springs out of the fork tubes.
I noticed that they were progressive, with the closer coils of the spring at the bottom of the tube, and the coils that were farther apart were at the top of the fork tube.
This got me wondering... if the lower half of the fork transfers it's inertia to the upper half of the fork thru the spring and fork cap, would it make a difference if the springs were installed upside down?

Oh, yeah, I re-installed them the way way they came out.

As far as how they operate, it doesn't matter which way you put them in. I put mine in with the tight windings on top, thinking that it would reduce unsprung weight a little.
