Default belt / pulley width for wide tire

Just bought a 9" wide fender , cut my fneder struts . My question if anyone knows is I want to put on a 180 x 18 . I have heard that I can change my wheel spacing , go to a narrow belt and pulley .My bike is 87 fxtsc . I would like to avoid gojng to a wide tire swing arm . I dont really care to have a 250 or so . Any input would be appreciated .

Default Tire

For what its worth, i just did the same thing to my 06 superglide (cut struts off and chopped and welded a 9" strutless fender for a softail togetherto fit my bike and im running a 18x5.5" with a dunlop elite 3 200mm tire and i had no issues, used a little spacer for pulley and have about 1/4" from belt to tire
