Default Removing stubborn rear axle.....

Time is near to replace a well worn out Metzler. Tried today to pull out axle but no go.
Simple job, just pull off axle covers, loosen up adjuster set screws, pull off axle nut, and axle should slide right out, right?
Nope.......I also tried by putting&nbsp\\; nut back on and hitting with a soft blow...but no go....(sorry, forgot to mention it's a 95 Fatboy with a PM Phatail kit)

So before I try some old school methods, any advice?
Thanks[8D]

I'm sure there's a little surface rust on the axle causing it to be tight coming thru the bearings. A soft blow hammer will not work. Use a small sledge and an old 1/2" socket extension. Do not hit the end of the axle with the hammer! Put the extension on the axle and use it like a punch. It will come out. I also always lower the bike till the back tire just touches the ground to relieve the pressure on the axle.

Remember to put a thin coat of anti-sieze on the axle before you re-install it or you'll be cussing yourself the next time.

Thanks for the response.
No doubt a bit more effort on my part to knock it out!

Well, got the axle 3/4 of the way out, and it won't go any further. After soaking it overnite if popped loose then stopped. It's almost like the threaded side is too big to come out of the other side....the spacers all are free turning and not stuck on the axle. Took some long aluminum stock put it through the right side and tried to hammer it out that way with the rear wheel supported with no luck.........[:@]

Well, finally got this pain in the azz axle out. Figured while I have it out, i'll throw some new wheels bearings in it, polish up the axle, and lube it good before reinstalling.&nbsp\\;
