Default Fork Stop

It may be a stupid question, but does anyone know what the purpose of the fork stop is?

If i'm not explaining myself properly, it's that rubber ring that is slid over the forks and is placed in the middle of the triple trees, resting on the bottom.

I was installing forks yesterday, and forgot to put them in initially, and had to re and re them. I thought they were only there to hold the fork in place untill I tightened the bolts, but want to know if there is another reason.

They stop the forks from traveling past a determined angle. The rubber ones on the baggers protect the frame where they hit. If you leave them out, the front end will travel further left and right, allowing front-end and accessories to hit the tank, engine gaurd, pinch wires....etc.
