Rear brake issue - PM 4 piston caliper + Harley floating rotor

Rear brake issue - PM 4 piston caliper + Harley floating rotor
I upgraded my stock brake calipers and rotors due to the frequent squealing noise. I used PM 4 piston units and HD floaters front and back. The front brakes work great with no issues. The rear ran hot during wear in period and never achieved good breaking action. I cant even lock up the rear tire if you can believe that. I have bleed the rear several times with my "Mighty Vac" without any change in loss of rear braking. I also removed the pads and looked for signs of glazing. I didn't see any, but did run the pads over crocus cloth to freshen them up a bit.
I called Performance Machine and they said that the PM pads don't play well with stainless rotors. Is this true? any suggestions other than buy PM a PM rotor?

RE: Rear brake issue - PM 4 piston caliper + Harley floating rotor
Over the winter I installed new PM 4 piston brakes front & rear. Previously had stainless rotors not floating though. After installation and several test rides I had zero heat issues front or back. Breaking power was greatly increased over factory brakes.
Is your rear PM caliper lined up dead center with your floating rear rotor?

PM is right, not all pads work well with stainless rotors. One batch of pads designed to be used on steel or composite rotors may work fine on stainless while another batch of the same type pad may not work at all. My suggestion is to change the rotor with a PM rotor, or try another set of pads.
I put a set of PM calipers on my old shovel with stainless HD rotors and my bike actually sped up when I applied the brakes! Now THAT will get your attention!!

I found my own problem. I replaced the pads with Lyndal Z pads and the problem was still there. I rechecked the centering of the caliper over the rotor and found out that if was off slightly. After shimming it out .016, with the PM supplied shims, the problem was solved. The Lyndal pads remain and are great! Thanks to all for their suggestions! [:@]

I had same issue with 4 piston Hawg halters on front. Was an alignment issue and solved it with a shim. Unbelievableincrease in braking power. Not sure why HD doesnt use a better quality caliper asOEM.I can understand going basic on style areas and aestheticsto stimulate aftermarket sales but highest quality braking shouldn't be one.
