Default Powder Coating on Wheels

I just bought a 2001 FXDXT Dyna T-Sport, which comes blacked out pretty much like a night train. Only thing I don't like is those bright aluminum wheels. One option I'm considering is topowdercoat those wheels black, then I think they'd look pretty hot. Not as good as HogPro, buta helluva lot cheaper that's for sure. Does anyone know if after powdercoating, you can still run tubeless tires? I've had such bad luck in the past with flats on tube tires.

Did a set of mags 15 yrs ago. Just make sure that you mask off the inside
of the wheel where the bead sits. A good powder coater will know what to do.

yup, egor is right. we have powdercoated many rims and never masked the safety bead section and have never had a leaking problem. if you want to play it safe, masking would be ideal

Masking the beaded edge is absolutely not necessary unless you are going to use a very heavy textured powder. No smooth, or even fine textured finishes will interfere with the tire bead seal at all.

Thanks for the info guys. I had not been concerned with the graininess off the coat but of the slickness, but it sounds like this is of no concern at all. So I'm just going to have at it. Again I appreciate the info.

So it won't melt the rubber in the middle? I'm in the same boat looking for a stock 21" front to PC

Lundee - I don't know what rubber you are referring to but all rubber, seals and bearings must be removed for powder coating. If you are doing laced rims, they must be disassembled and all parts coated individually.
