Default front grease leak?

Hello,
I have my sportster stored in a neighbors un heated garage. i went to check on it and i noticed grease coming out of the bottom of the handlebar stem. is it because of the cold? it was real cold for a while here in ny. Or is it problem?
thanks

Looks like someone got a little too much grease in the steering head bearings. My Electra glide Classic does the same thing, it's just under the fairing where you can't see it.

It's not a problem, jsut wipe it off. It probably ozzed out because you have it in a heated garage and its not being used. The grease just got hot and liquified a little.

Regards,

Bill

there is a problem if greese is not being pushed out of steering head. the steering head bearings are not sealed so moisture and grime will work its way in the only way to keep the steering clean is to purge the bearings. its a bit messy but your bearings will last.

That usually happens when it is in a heated garage after a service or sitting in the summer sun after a service and greasing of the front end. Shouldn't happen in an unheated garage though as you say. No big deal either way. There's no seal in there that would prevent that so just wipe it off and ride.

I am researching this right now as I will be doing my own 10k. Someone told me to use HD "special" grease to prevent this from happening. Looking through my manuals it came up as #99855-89. I was told if you use a thinner grease it will seep out. Tim

Tim

It will still probably happen with the "special" grease too. The factory only coats the bearings and does not fill the neck. Once a service is done, it should fill the neck also and this is when the grease seeps out after it warms up either from riding or in hot temps. It'll stop after a ride or two.
