Default draining front brake

Hey guys
I want to take my front caliper off to go get it
chromed. I'm just wondering what the best way
is to go about it?
How do I drain the fluid and all?

Thanks in advance

Crazy - I'm not a wrench so other's more experienced might chime in with more help. First off, get a HD service manual for future reference, money well spent. Second you didn't say what year so not sure if this will help, will talk about 00+ year caliper. Also, don't have my manual here so this is from memory. Is that enough "disclaimers" for ya!!

Remove cover on master cylinder, use something to suck some of the fluid out. On the caliper, GENTLY pry the pads back against the caliper to get them off the disc. If you didn't remove fluid, then it'll squirt all over!!! Remove the two pad retaining/guide bolts (1/4" 12 point - the small ones on the caliper). Back them off together for the first couple of turns (not sure if necessary, but for some reason this sticks in my head). Remove the pads. Put a can under the caliper and remove the brake hose, some fluid should drain out. Next remove the two caliper mounting bolts, 10 or 12 mm, and lift caliper off. Turn caliper upside down over can to let drain.

Now your gonna have to disassemble the caliper to to get the pistons/o-rings and seals out. This is where I get stuck right now - there's a way to get the pistons out, not sure if you do it before separating the halves or after - hopefull someone will chime in. I can check my manual later for ya.

You might want to check prices on chrome calipers. Sometimes it's easier and cheaper to just buy a chromed part.

Thanks guys

Gadzooks thanks for all the info man but I think I'm
going to go JaimieWG's way. I've been
looking around and it's about the same price
just to buy a new one. Since I don't know how
to reasemble one, they are charging me to do
that as well.

Thanks

Crazy - no sweat! After I posted I thought - maybe he should buy a chrome one!! But my fingers were too tired to send another reply -- just kidding. Make sure you get the washers for the banjo bolt when you replace the caliper - not sure if they come in the kit.
