Default Cams; Chain Or Gear?

2003 Heritage Classic, 52K miles, cam chain shoes never changed, all stock at this time other than SE Air Cleaner and original owner bored out the stock exhaust. Planning on upgrade to light set of cams (unknown what yet), tuner, poss new exhaust (Thunderheader. Not sure on going to gear drive cams or the updated cam plate from Harley. Have heard that the miles may have caused internal tolerances to be excessive for the gear drive? I am in no way experienced with building or working on bikes, Will have the work all done by an experienced shop.. Want a bike that is going to be good for the long ride, not a speed freak (but do like a little get up and go at times). Want it reliable.. Thanks

I would suggest replacing the shoes with a set from Cyco. As far as cams, Andrews 21 or 26 are good for a stock 88". You could have your mechanic check the crank for run-out and weigh the cost benefit of going to gear drive cams. The hydraulic upgrade will run $1600 or so installed with cams depending on how much your mechanic charges.

I am trying to decide weather I should go to gear drive or the updated Harley Cam Plate as indicated by the message title... I believe that the chain drive will provide a stronger engine (bit more noise) with more precise timing.. As I said; I am looking for a bit of a power boost but still remain reliable for the long runs.. Thanks

There is no point visiting an expert and telling him what to do! So talk to your chosen shop, tell them what you are after and take their advice. They will have experience of the parts they have found to be reliable and may even be able to offer you a package deal.
