I seem to remember some sort of inherent problem with the 2000 model engines. Was it soft cam material or something like that? I'm shopping for a used bike and would like to have this info. Is the problem easily remedied? Thanks

It was a cam bearing issue. Most of them were replaced under warranty. They sixed the problem at the factory mid to late 2000.

The problem was the rear cam bearing. This was in early 2000 models. It was prone to failure. The MoCo only authorized fixing it if it failed. (A few dealers fudged and fixed them for customers before the failure.) The MoCo gave a 5yr./50k warranty on this problem. I was a proud new owner for 11 months when I got the letter in the mail basically telling my bike had a part that may break, would likely leave me stranded, and would't be replaced until it broke.

I rode on that "bad bearing" 52k miles and never had a problem. When the warranty expired was when I swapped to gear drive cams.

You can have a dealer run the motor number and see if the bike was an affected model and if it has been updated thru a warranty repair.

I believe all 1999 Twincams and some 2000 Twincams had a recall where the bolts on the cam support plate had to be replaced. The original bolts may break, HD claimed they used inferior bolts there.

My 1999 Dyna FXDS-Conv had the above recall performed. The bike had almost 30,000 miles when the cam bearings went out. Of course the bike was older than five years of age...HD did not want to help. I am not saying the Twin Cam is a bad engine...but I do believe HD could have done ALOT better. I did the work myself on my Dyna....but I went back to the EVO 100%.

The EVO may be outdated...but it proved itself to be extremely reliable.
