Default Cam Bearing puller EVO?

Hi, I'm new and this is my first post. I'm new at working Harleys too so please bear with?

I've been a Chevy hot rodder for years so I know some mechanics. I can rebuild an engine, put in a clutch, etc. That doesn't get it with this Wide Glide.

I'm reading about how to put a new cam and cam bearing in my 1996 EVO. I believe I understand what to do. I even have good bolt cutters.

The thing that stumps me and I'd like to have it in hand before I start is a reference to a "cam bearing puller." I want to put in a Torrington bearing but I can't find a picture of the puller to see if I have anything that will work.

If it's a special tool, what do you recommend?

Also, is Torrington about as good as I can do?

Is an Andrews EV27 a good choice for an old duffer? I already have a jetted carb, intake and pipes. (stage 1?)

I will replace "everything" including lifters, oil pump gear, crank gear, adjustable pushrods, gaskets etc. Anything else I should do?

Any other advice, please?

Oh Yeah, any suggestions about a good place to buy these parts?

Thanks,

JB

For the cam bearing puller, go to Autozone and ask to rent theirBlind Hole Puller Set #27128. They'll make you charge the cost of it (around $140 if I remember correctly) to your Credit Card, and then they'll just refund it when you return it.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago, and it works like a charm. Took about 30 seconds to remove the old cam bearing... Best of all, it's FREE.

Make sure your buy "time saver" or "quick install" pushrods. Not all adjustable pushrods allow you to replace without removing the rockers. Replace the cam seal as well, it's cheap, and you'll need exhaust gaskets. I really don't see a need to replace the oil pump gear and the crank gear unless they are really worn, but that's your call and money. The andrews EV27 is what a mojority of EVO guys prefer for all round street riding, drag racing is a different story. If you don't havea service manual GET ONE. For parts try Zanotties, Chicago HD or Jerih Cycles. Here is a link with pics for a cam install on an EVO.

Thanks! And thanks for the link - good reading.

I do have a Clymer book. Should I get something else?

Jims makes an evo cam bearing puller. Not sure on price. All it is though is a spreader type bearing puller. It has a hollw housing that will shoulder on the case for removal. Drag Specialties carries needle bearings for evo and twin cam for high performance. They have double the needles and hold up much longer. Not sur on the brand name.

Install a .050" cam shim with the ev27, and I dont want to see those heads put back on with out taking .060" off the deck surface, that will wake that cam big time.

The Clymer should be fine but the HD service manual is better, $49 from Zanotti's, it's up to you.

Does the .060 come off the heads or the cylinders? I realize the machinist will know, but I'm curious.

BTW, in the mid-70's I owned and operated an automotive machine shop. It helps a lot with basics, but doesn't do me any good on this EVO...

All your machining will be done on the head deck surface itself. Any modification ive seen on cylinders is the o-ring conversion which replaces head gaskets for a tighter seal. Also if you are really looking for a trick you should set up your proper squish clearance. That is where you use different base gaskets to determine your pistion deck height. Optimum squish band clearance is about .034" to .036". Ok that is all today
