Default CAM KIT QUESTION

What's the difference between an S&S 585G cam kit with 4 gearsand an SE 260 cam kit (HD brand)?

It was verbally explained, but I didn't totally get it. Any clarification out there?

Well, that is the simplest explanation but there is a difference between the two.....gears will let you get away from chain tensioners although the newer version is better.

The chain assembly, even the newer one in the 07s, requires more HP to turn the chains, tensioner & cams than does the gears set-up. On a mild street motor, I wouldnt think it would be worth the extra $$ just to go with gears.

Thanks! Now I know even more--something else theoriginal (dealership) installer neglected to do, besides not having enough clearance in the rockerbox/cam housing for the cams, when adding the 95 big bore upgrades.

go to nightrider.com and look at the cam specifications charts. there is a difference in those cams in the intake openings and closings, exhaust openings and closings, durations, etc. - all of which affect the torque and horsepower at different rpm's. you need a good mechanic to give you advice on what cam to use based upon what you want in your riding (early torque or later rpm horsepower, riding two up or solo, street riding or touring long miles, etc), the engine build, exhaust systems, etc.

much more involved than just whether chain driven or gear drive.

Great site to be pointed to. Thanks! I can now sound like I know what I'm talking about--this greenhorn with a powerful motor.
