RE: Engine Knock when Cold
It may knock when cold, and go away.... but watch for it getting worse as you put miles on it. This year we have had to replace the flywheels in two 2000 XLs. In both of them the front connecting rod went south, and for whatever reason, in the 2000 model year the Moco started putting one piece flywheel assemblies in the Sportsters. Miles do not seem to be a factor, as the first one we did had 18,000 miles, while the second had 6500. In both cases, the knock was a slight tap, but got worse as time wore on. I believe the flywheel assembly is somewhere between 500-1000 bucks, and with whatever your mechanic charges to take the motor out and split the cases, this job can get sort of expensive.
