You don't need geardrives, but as long as your pinion shaft TIR, is at .003" or less, and you have the extra dough, then yes, they are a great upgrade.
One of the reasons I suggested, the 26 cam, is that, IF, you wanted more later, the cam surrounded by say a 98" big-bore kit, with the compression optimised, and some mild head work, is quite a snappy combination.

Those '07 heads would be an improvement without any work; they flow better than the OEM '02 heads. Combine the heads with a .030" head gasket or not, depending on cam selection, and you will see a nice gain. I used a set of those heads, cleaned up, milled for some compression and a SERDI valve job on a 95" build for a buddy's Deuce. Motor made 104TQ/93HP. No port/polish; compression is your friend.
Of course headwork will make a difference; just depends on how much money you wan to spend.
