Default Rinehart install..Pain in the butt...Another problem..

Seems like I cant win on a simple exhaust install. Ever had one of those weeks when nothing goes right? This is my week I guess.
Went to install the new exhaust. Got old one off, what a pain. Went to put new one one, and screwed up my new HD gaskets trying to get them in the heads. Not enough patience. Used James gaskets that came with pipes and put them on. Somewhat of a pain but got them on. Noticed that left side passenger peg mount was rubbing, realized I should have read the directions I guess. Gave up last night. Tonight, had to remove whole left side pipe and muffler to get to the peg mount and lower it a notch, Put it all back on and finshed the heat shield on the right side. Good, finally done. Started it for a second, and noticed the left side muffler was crooked. Reached down and you could turn it! Rinehart clamp is so tight it was trying to round the allen wrench. Obviously not tight. So, gave up for tonight, ready to get gasoline and a match! lol Guess I ought to get some of the copper high temp sealer and take the mufflers off again tommorrow and use some sealer AND the old HD clamps that came off the bike? What do you think? As I am over it. Simplest things and I always seem to get screwed by them..lol

Try a socket bit 3/8 drive to get some torque on it, and definitly use some ultra copper, says so right in the directions!

I have installed 2 sets of Rinehart's on Street Glides it really helps if you have 2 people doing the install. With 2 guys you can line things up and not scratch your bike or chrome. It's kind of a B**** if you are doing it alone.
Be patient and good luck.

Willl take the muffs off and do theultra copper and try a socket as well, although it is so tight now its rounding the head on the clamp! lol I know on the directions now.... guess you should always read them no matter how easy it appears..lol

I know what you mean.. Kinda a bear by your self. I ended up taping most everything that could get scratched with some of that blue painters tape during assembly like the primary area etc, then once tighted up, peeled it off. Seemed to work ok.

The Ultra Copper is a good idea. There's not a better muffler clamp out there than the factory H-D piece. Manual says not to use them more than once. I went through this when I changed my exhaust. Get a new pair of the H-D clamps and torque to spec, they work.

Yeah, the Harley Torca clamps are good. They stretch like a rubber band when you put them on, so they seal well. I guess that's why you can only use them once.

I've had Rineharts on my Road King since 2004.

I was surprised to find out that the muffler clamp allen head is metric.

I'm stationed in Japan and when I changed back to stock for inspection this year I went to the local "Home Depot" type place to get new allen bolts for the clamps. That's when I discovered the bolts are metric threaded and metric allen keyed.

Hope this helps you out a little, I got mine torqued pretty good now using the correct wrench- I'd also advise using never seize on those threads.
