Question Heat shield chrome going pitting

I just replaced my stock headers and V&H with a D&D fatcat 2-into-1 set up. The dyno tuned torque and HP gains through the powerband were great. The downside is, within only a couple hundred miles, a really bad spot developed on the chrome heat shield right where the clamp attaches it to the pipe.

Good news - D&D is sending me another one - awesome!

Now the question is, how do I keep it from happening again? I was thinking I should put some exhaust tape/wrap around the pipe at the clamp area to help prevent heat from spreading up to the shield through the clamp. Anyone else have this issue or know another solution?

I have about 700 miles on my new 2013 FLTRX and I have several blue spots and in one spot its like corrosion or an etching on the pipe. I went to the dealership yesterday and showed them of which they called D and D. Now D and D wants pictures and who knows what else before sending a new pipe.
This is my second pipe from D and D the first one was black ceramic on my 2010 FLHX with Head-Quarters 107. I loved the set up so much that I wanted the same pipe but chrome on this bike. Im hoping chrome is not going to be an issue with this company.

Do you have a tuner on your bike, is it tuned for the Fat Cat? Is your motor running hot like all factory tuned Harleys? That might burn the chrome on the heat shields. I have a lot of miles on a chrome Fat Cat and it still looks like new. The motor is built, and properly tuned. D&D's chrome is well known to be beautiful.
