Default Leaking Rocker Cover

Well I was really pissed until I searched the forum and found many a leaking rocker box cover. I only have 3500 miles on a 2005 Springer, the rear rocker box cover is seeping oil, im going to check the bolts and make sure there snug, then what?? I guess remove covers and replace gasket?? any suggestions are appreciated, im a rookie wrench, but ill give it a shot. Im not paying some clown $500 to put a new gasket in................

Check the bolts and torque them in the right sequence. If that doesn't work, replace the gasket yourself. It's no big deal and a good job for a rookie wrench.

Get a good inch/lb torque wrench and ft/lb. The HD shop mainual pay 4 self 1st time you save a service call. Good project to start learning your bike.

As someone said, no big deal. Screws get loose over time due to expansion and contraction. Your wrench should be checking this. I had the same thing happen at about 26,000 miles. I just took a wrench and snugged them up a little and the leak stopped. I've put 10,000 miles on since then with no problem. I normally use a torque wrench but I would have had to pull the tank and was too lazy. Don't ham hand it, just tighten them up a little with an open end or box end wrench and you should be able to stop the leak and not warp the covers.

Easy job, but right from the start get in the habit of taking your time & doing things right w/your bike. Use the TQ sequence in your service manual & use a TQ wrench to snug it back to spec. Snap-On makes a torque adaptor that'll help here:

Overtightening and/or usingthe wrong sequence can warp your rocker cover & it'll weep from now on if you warp it. If it still leaks afteryou tq it back downthen it'stime for a new gasket; follow SM instructions.

Nobody loves your bike as much as you do.
