Does a Stage 1 Re-Map actually help?

Does a Stage 1 Re-Map actually help?
I am new to the forums, so hopefully I am posting this in the right place.
After tons of reading here, I had decided that because I don't really plan on any other major changes, I would just have the Service Dept. do a Stage 1 Remap when I added my new Stage 1 Air Filter. From what I had read, it would cost about $150.00 and would do the trick.
So I called the service department and asked for a quote. First they told me that it was useless and wouldn't change anything, then proceeded to tell me that it would be $295.00.
My question to all of you is "am I getting screwed by the dealership service department"? I was happy that I had finally decided what to do, and then I feel like I am back at square one.
Any feedback would be great. Thanks
Jason

Don't wast your money on the stage 1 flash. If all your doing is Air Cleaner and exhaust you can get xieds for less then what the dealer wants for a flash. Look here.

Hey Jason welcome to the forum.
You will get different opinions on the dealer download, aftermarket ECM or if you need to do anything.
Here is what I did, my first bike when I added SEAC and the pipes I did the dealer re-map, paid about 200. I then changed the pipes and wanted to decrease the heat the bike had, so I added the aftermarket ECM, piggyback unit, to add more fuel and improve throttle response. This effectively negated the ECM remap I had done from the dealer. The money I paid the dealer was money I should have put towards the aftermarket ECM.
If you choose to go with external ECMs or piggyback units, the prices are anywhere from 300 up. You will get many opinions on which one to use, but most of them allow you to remap as you make changes to your bike. Most of us have made changes to our bikes as we ride and spend time on the forum.
Hope this helps and re-post any other questions.

The only thing I liked out of my stage1 download was the 6200rpm limit. yes I know the pc5 can change the rpm limit to 6200 but it manipulates it. the needle stays at 5200 and the bike revs to 6200 kinda like flying blind for a 1000 rpms.
I didn't pay for my stage1 it was in the bike when I bought it.
