Default MM Injection issue 2001 FLHPI - carbon on front cylinder only

2001 FLHPI (Road King Police w/injection)

I've got carbon build-up and smoke (like that cyl is running rich) coming from only my front cylinder. Compression, oiling, etc is all fine, so it looks like a fuel delivery problem. I've got the orange-top MM injectors (are these high-flow?) and the o-rings on the outside look ok....but...ya never know. This is a relatively recent issue. Idle is rough now when cold.

Looking for guidance on my Magneti Marelli injection system. At this point, I've replaced plugs, coils/wires but no avail...

Questions:

Anyone else seen this?
Should I replace the entire injectors?
What is the difference between green, orange and black tops on the injectors?

I cannot find any information on any of this stuff...even my dealer doesn't seem to know how to approach, so they just want to replace both injectors.

THOUGHTS?

Carbon takes a while to build up. Smoke?? How much and when? Has fuel consumption changed recently? Have you looked at/compared the plugs from the front to the rear cylinder? Have you done a compression and/or leakdown test to compare the front to rear cylinder?

Symptoms are indicative of leaking valve guide seals; I would be looking there first before moving on to injectors.

As djl says, could very well be a valve guide seal, if so, you should have excessive build up on that spark plug. Intake leaks between the head and induction module are pretty common these days, to check for an intake leak, let the bike idle and spray that area with parts cleaner, or even a spray bottle of water, if the idle changes either way, rpm increases or the engine stalls, you have just found your problem, be carefull not to let spray in the air filter/intake area or you wil get a false indication.

THOUGHTS?
Very limited information:
1-How many miles? a little history like is this a totaled bike?
2-What type of modification to motor..air cleaner, pipes, cam ?
3-Does the bike have a fuel adder? power commander, DFO etc.
4-How long have you owned the bike?
5-any check engine lights?
6-have you read the codes?
Right now all we have is: carbon build-up, you replaced coil..why?tested? replaced with new?, wires why? tested? new?and plugs.
and we know you have a rough cold idle.
Soft carbon build-up could just be indicative of a rich mixture due to anything from a spark not firing to an over rich fuel map on a fuel adder.
A rough idle could be part of the above or:
might be a fuel line issue, engine temp. sensor, throttle body dirty, hows the inside of the tank?.
Finally are you riding the bike or is it not road ready?
And welcome.

You missed the smoke.
