Default New Bike performance questions...help

I just bought a new softail slim and am wanting to do an air cleaner kit, I like the black cover and really want to keep it, Id like to throw a full set of pipes and the old days of tuning my carb are gone, my dealer wants a fortune to do it and I like wrenching on my own bike. Can you help me with what I need to tune the fuel injection. I dont think Ill be doing cams or anything right now, just basic breather and pipes for now. What do I have to buy? Power commander? Screaming eagle? Thundermax? Where do I start?

I started with a power commander. It was easy to work with, you'll forget about re-jetting real quickly.

I'd suggest you look for a map for the pipes and AC that you want to install first. That will be the key to having your combination run well.

Instead of the Power Commander Dynojet offers a Power Vision which is a much better option. Or for a little less $ you could get a Mastertune TTS or the SE Pro Super Tuner. These do not piggyback the ECM but allow the user to modify the OEM mapping on the bike.

Power Vision gets my vote.

If later you change anything else the PV will take care of it.

A Stage I upgrade (pipes and air filter) does not need the more sophisticated fuel management systems; NEED is the operative word. Even if you plan on some mild bolt in cams down the road, a less sophisticated system like the Dobeck TFI is all you really need. Should you out grow it and need a more sophisticated fuel management system, the Dobeck units are popular and go fast on Ebay. The install is DIY, good instructions, great customer service and tech support. Give them a call; the new Gen 4 is a sweet setup and you can "tune" with any of them yourself.

The downside to the more sophisticated systems is that unless you spend $300 or so on a dyno tune, the tune will always be off and the symptoms could included decel popping, difficulty starting, poor mileage, etc. Every motor is different, operating in different environments and one size doesn't fit all.

No one had mentioned the Dobeck hardware but IMHO, it is worth a look for your application.

I used Dobeck TFI when I first did Stage I ...

Later switched to a ThunderMax ECM when I did cams, big bore kit and heads ...
