Default Cam bearing orientation question

I know everyone says "have the lettering facing outwards"..but why? I was looking at the new torrington bearings I received from Fuel Moto and they're the same on both sides, except one side has lettering and one side doesn't.. There wasn't a lip or anything across the top or anything that would make it seem that installing them one way or the other would make a difference, aside from the lettering

why would i need to read the lettering on the side of the cam bearing? really though.. is it just a rule of thumb to have the lettering outwards, or does it really matter?

thanks much, that didn't come up in my search, but i think it answered my question.. it doesn't really matter, except supposedly one side is rolled to make the cam bearing easier to install, and to identify the cam bearing once it's installed (So maybe later on for some mid-winter reading I'll have an option )..

cool thanks.. now let this thread die with the rest of them

their not the same, one side is rolled, the other square, but more importantly is their made to be pressed on the square side, pressing on the rolled side can crack the housing

It does matter. Don't let the thread die until you read prodrag's post.

i installed them with the lettering outwards, it was just a curiosity thing that the rolled end goes in first as an ease of fitment thing, as opposed to the flat end with the letters on them

Just to throw my 2 cents in, it does matter, the rolled edge goes in towards the crank. You will see when bearing is removed there is a very thin wall for the bearing, the square edge would be more of a chance to break thru. under any type of stress, or even pushing to far in at install, and bam there goes the case.
