Default Sputtering at high speed

I have an 82 Ironhead. While cruising at 75 it starts to sputter like it isn't getting any gas. I'll switch to reserve and still have the same problem. Once I slow dow to about 60 it rides normal again. This has happened to me three different times (using different gas stations). I drained the tank (no crud), check the screen (it was clean), put back the tank and it happened again. Any suggestions? Petcock not letting enough gas flow? Carb problem?

An 82? you must have points ignition, check out the points and set the timing, best to replace the points and condenser

I would check the carb for water and trash. check the float needle and seat for wear and float height while I was in there. Do a compression test, make sure the fuel lines are good, not gummy, as well as the tank vent line. It may be something simple, may not. Have you done any work on the bike lately?

Even though you don't have points/condenser, I think it still might have a mechanical advance. Not sure as I ain't up on the newer bikes! If it does have the mechanical advance, it could be worn and not advancing enough. You won't notice it too much at lower speeds, but under heavy load or higher speed it'll start cutting out.

Another thing to check is your float level. If it's too low, you'll "run out of gas" at higher speeds. Make sure the fuel line isn't collapsing, too.
