Question Stepped vs non stepped exhaust?? Facts wanted

I have been looking to upgrade pipes on the bike. It had a set of hideous looking pipes, needles to say I cut them off strait. They kinda look like alot of the short shot style exhausts out there, I am satisfied with the look, sound. They are 1 3/4'' from front to back, basically drag pipes cut evenly. Would I be able to tell a noticeable difference if I were to go with a stepped style exhaust 1 3/4'' to a 2.xx''. I do not want to go with a 2 in 1, they are not my cup of tea, but I know they make the broadest increase. I know on automotive set ups that stepped headers are usually good for hp/tq through out the rpm range, been into that kinda stuff for a good while. Not as familiar with the HD stuff, my other bikes I have always had drag pipes on it, it never made a diff to me, but now I want new pipes, want to make the rite choice...Any solid info or experience would be great. Thanks
