Default Taking off Mufflers

I have a 2009 FLSTN and it still has the stock exhaust on it. It is FI. If I take the mufflers off will it mess up the bike? If so, what would happen? Is there a better idea other than spending a fortune on new exhaust?

Check out americancustom.com. They have good prices and their work sounds good.

If you take off the mufflers and don't put other ones back on? You run your bike mufflerless?

I am not the resident guru, but its my understanding that increasing the exhaust flow without a corresponding fuel mixture change would wind up leaning out the engine which would make it run hotter.
