Default airfilters, K+N, Vs SE

K+N makes a stage 1 kit now Part # rk-3909, its complete with backin plate, h-ware,stack
filter, etc,, reuses stock filter cover.... now isnt that the same as SE stage 1 ?
so ,,why buy SE then buy a replacement K+N filter?
has anyone tried these.?.

The shape of the filter is larger (longer) and it'snot as tallas the stage 1 from HD but it probably flows about the same as the stage 1 does. Your best bet would be to call K&N and ask for the flow differences.

That is damned near the same kit that HP Inc sells as it's High Flow AC kit.......

Backing plate is a ballbuster, and it weighs a ton....

You are still better off getting the smaller HD-0800.... as you utilize the smaller backing plate, and a WIDER but smaller AC unit.....

At our shop, I have been encouraging most of the customers as well as the parts counter to use the 0800 as the initial filter, vice the SE unit.....

I have the RK-3909 on my 07 Street Glide, and I like it O.K. The negatives are a cheesy rubber velocity stack under the filter that squishes into the intake no matter how careful you mount it, and the crankcase breather bolts don't funnel the expelled oil into the intake throat like a Ness Big Sucker. The oil just drips down into the filter element. The positives are that it mounts up closer to the bike giving your right leg a little more room than the Ness or S.E. Also, it flows very well. A flow bench test posted a few issues ago in American Rider magazine showed it flowed 300 CFM compared to the S.E. paper element at 280 CFM and the stock unit at 170 CFM. They didn't test theK&N 0800 filter that fits the Ness and S.E. backing plate, but it sure seems like it should flow better than the 280 CFM paper throwaway element.
