Yes it can be done!
I used two pairs of needle nose vise grips. One on the spring and the other on the arm that holds the tensioner out of the way (specialty tool location).
It was a big pain in the buttocks!

If I were in it that far I would change Bearings. Cheap insurance. Getting the inner bearing puller/installer is the expensive part. The outer can be heated to get it outbut considering what you have invested in your bike..............? Just a thought.
