Default Cam Bearings

09 Fatboy

I had my cam bearings repaced when I installed my 255s at about 5000 miles..
Now at 10,000 miles I am thinking of changing to Woods 555

Question is , do I need to replace cam bearings everytime I change cams ??
or are they good for say 25,000 miles ?

Thanks

Inspect, and if no visible damage to cams or needles reuse them, they will be fine.
I had a bad experience getting my cam bearings out and I can truly say I almost wished I would have left the stock ones in, but now that it's done it was worth it in the end. I was lucky. I had the top end off and was able to retrieve all broken pieces.
Any1 changing cam bearings use the proper tools the couple $$ spent at Georges garage is well worth it and will save some major grief. the auto zone blind bearing tool isn't trust worthy.

Agree you should be good. I did the same with about 4k on the bearings
+1 on Georges Garage, tools work great and effortless to install the bearings correctly. I have a set of 555 for sale if interested, upgraded to 777

A blind hole puller is the proper tool; Georges tool is a blind hole puller. If the AZ tool is fitted with the correct collet and the collet has not been damaged and the proper procedure followed, the removal of the inner cam bearings should not be a problem. Many have done it with no issues.

As for the OP's question, if the cam bearings are the full compliment and not the INA caged bearings, reuse is probably OK. But, for me, new cams means new cam bearings. They are cheap and easy to R/R.

Seems to me that unless you plan to go into the cam chest frequently, for the price of the new bearings I would install them and not have to worry about going back in down the road.

Yes the bearings only have 5K on them and should be fine but is it worth $20 to have to go back in sooner than if you use new bearing? I have a bearing puller / install tool so servicing this on my bikes isn't too much of a stretch, but for $20 bucks a set I would change them personally.
