I like to use an engine stethoscope to locate them, it really helps me to find the exact area the noise is coming from.
That's a good suggestion because my ear keeps deceiving me. At times it sounds like it's drive train noise. Other times it sounds like it's all primary noise. Now I'm just confused.

Either way down the line I'm just going to put on SEII's so I hear the pipes and not the engine while I'm riding. I like the sound of pipes much better than the engine. It only the lifter sound was deep and low not clunky and high.

My bike is noisy too. Sometimes I think it is the valve train and other times it is the primary....

I'm having a cam bearing replaced in a 95 Road King. The needles in the original are said to be a cheeper bearing, and this is a common problem acording to the wrench. Its chirping.. I hope no parts went in to the motor..
Hold my breath I guess..

We are looking at a trashed cam and bearing, and abrasive bearing parts going to the oil pump from here..
I hope we can salvage this OK. Its always hard to beleive a cheeper bearing is used over the replacement style when we see this.
There must be many forms of this shortcutting to save a dollar. 15K on this bike. It don't seem right.

Maybe if Harley raised the price they could afford a normal life part.

adjust your primary first that way you'll know if its the only thing making noise. it will at least help you isolate the other noise easier

I'm taking mine if for the 1k service Friday, I hear some ticking, a little more than the air cooled rice burner I used to ride, I just wonder if it's normal. Do they check valve clearances at the 1k service?

I'm coming up on my 1000 mile service and my RK sounds louder then my old softail did. Think I'm going to run by the dealer and let them have a listen.. I'm hoping thats just the way they sound then again my softail had alot louder exhaust then the RK. And I too am not sure if its the chain or valve, I'm leaning tword the valve train..

What are some things that can make the valve train abnormally loud?

I have the 07 RG with fulsac truduels ac PCIII .

As of late I went from V&H slipons to Rinehearts using the fulsac TD set up.
I thought I could use the map from PC site for rineheart trueduels I ran it like
that for a couple of days and noticed how loud the valves sounded.
I called fulsac guy and he said I should use the map for V&H trueduels.

I did what he said and this morning on the way to work the valves
were really quiet.
So that tells me that the wrong map can really change the way the
motor sounds.
