Default Butterfly type carb jetting (not a CV)

1986 Sportster 883/1200 converted.
It idles & cruises fine but on acceleration it hesitates and backfires through the carb.
Could it be in need of rejetting the slow jet???
Up or down??
It has a 52 slow jet & 125 main. Book calls for 52 slow & 155 main but 155 is way too rich.
