Default Air flow

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a little more air flow, not really more HP. I went to the HD shop the other day and they wanted 140.00 for a SE backing plate and filter. He said you just use the original cover. So I'm wondering if I bought a K&N filter just like the original and took a step drill bit and bored some holes in the backing plate(1"dia), would that not serve the same purpose? By the way, I just bought the bike ('99 FXDX) the owner had SE slip-ons and the carb rejetted. I can't believe he didn't up grade the air cleaner.

The S/E plate, or Ness unit will out-flow the other,
