Crank is .001 out of spec.
My buddy took his bike in for cam chain tensioners and upon inspection, they found the crank had .001 play on the oil pump. Now .001 is a very small number and acceptable is .003. So his is .004. We are having a new style cam plate and cams lifters etc. he simply can't afford a complete overhaul at $3300.00 plus labor for the exchange.
Is he doomed for another early shop visit?

If you are saying your buddys only has a 1 thou run out thats good. What the problem? thats pretty good for a stock crank from the factory. Did they do that right. Std is more 3 and 5 rom factory. What we see.
What work are they doing for you?

Last Moco bulletin we knew of, was .012".
While we all know that is a crazy number, I don't think I'd loose sleep over .004".
The big concern is if it was assembled that way, or if it has sissored.
Big PITA, but check it again in, say 3-4000 miles.

Scott,
I looked at his chain tensioners last summer and we decided to have them changed this winter, because although they showed some wear they would be OK until now at least.
I did not want to do the fix in case of unknown issues.
The dealer called yesterday and said the "flywheels are out of spec by .001..Harley says .003 max. The oil pump is scored and we advise at least a cam plate and cams and tensioners, we would like to re-man the engine"
Scott, this bike runs like a scalded dog and has the 95 kit with aftermarket cams, so I know it has had work since new, I just don't know if at 1 mile or 3000 miles or?
Thank You for your help and Drago also.

.004 is not all that bad anymore in comparison to what is now being shipped from the factory. As Scott at Hillside said, I have seen .035 to .005 on brand new engines. Put it back together, ride it and check it again down the road. If the dealer is wanting to do all that work at this time, they are looking to make some money. What they are calling scoring just may be the normal wear you see on the cam plate and remanning the engine, well, if it runs like a scalded dog - why? You dont mention what year bike or how many miles are on it, just curious as my answer would still be the same.
