Andrews 54 install clarification
07 night train w 96", Bassani, stage one, PCIII
I had always thought these were pretty much drop in. No clearances issues. Then the instructions from Andrews say this:
#17.
I've read nothing about this on any of the threads on any forum.
I'd really appreciate your thoughts and or experiences with the 54 install.

For engines with stock pistons and stock heads, 09H, 21H, 26H,
31H, 37H and 48H cams should be able to bolt in without head
work. 50H cams need piston to valve clearances and valve to
valve clearances checked. 54H, 55H and 60H cams need .620
minimum valve travel and .060 minimum piston to valve clearance.31H, 37H and 48H cams should be able to bolt in without head

You should have no valve spring issues with the .555" lift of the 54H. The beehive springs are supposed to be able to handle up to .575" lifts but I have read that installing cams with .575", or near, lift tend to be noisy as you are dealing with factory +/- tolerances.
Valve to piston clearance should not be an issue but it never hurts to check; it just takes a little extra time.

djl and wurk truk. your posts are in line with all ive read. Andrews install sheet threw me. thanks for the response.
troop, not planning a 4° gear. thx
will followup with 107" in the summer.
Also reading up on the head diff, if any, between stocker '07 and the so called improved heads on the '09+. Not getting solid intel on this. May just be factory cleaning up the '09s+ these days. Low budget plans after the 54 are 107" 10:1 and mild headwrk
thx all.

I HAVE a 107 with mild head work with 54s, and King of Cubes built my bottom end. It's a whole new bike.
I do NOT think there is ANY difference in heads 07 and up. The difference is the front top motor mount for baggers didn't show up until like 08. Those come with the holes drilled and tapped for the bracket that surrounds front exhaust. I've been told a head shop could drill those holes in an 07 head. But on a Softy? It would not be worth the money to buy 09 heads, in fact the 07 casting material may be better and less porous. There is NO clean up or anything like that from the MOCO.

Wurk truk you're the first I've come across with the setup I seek. Would you have done anything differently? Thx for the detail on the head diff 07 x 09. I plan to p&p my stock heads when the 107" kit is in reach. It's about all I can afford for the bike and that setup looks like a good one for my $. Thx!!
