07 starter grind
#4
Yes, I have been having the same problem with my 07 FXDB for some time.
I took mine to the local dealer and they suggested that since I have the 110 kit installed, I would need to go with the High Output starter. I did that. Now about 1 year later it is doing it again. Only grinds when it is hot... Right?
I have had the starter in and out a few times checking the teeth on both ends to see if there was damage. None was seen. I did the complete cheap checks. Full battery, proper grounding and good connections on all. Most cases one of these will correct the problem. I am now at the point of replacing the starter clutch. Harley starters have a weak area here. The heat generated on a Harley engine can be very extreme in certain locations around the world. This is supposed to be the answer for my problem, but what would the difference be with the original starter clutch that came with the new starter... Nothing.

Thanks! My '07 Dyna ahs been doing the grinding thing intermittantly. Sunday, out for a ride, stopped for lunch, went to start up and grinding sounded like it was going to self destruct. Now I know what the dealer should be telling me when I take the bike in Friday.

Grinding starter motor
I have same problem on my 97 Heritage Softail Classic with 26,000 miles. The prevous owner broke the stock starter with similar. During the first year I owned the bike the starter one-way failed. Once torn down, I discovered a damaged ring gear. I replaced the ring gear and installed an Ultima High torque (2.0kw) starter and had no probelms for the remainder of the 2010 riding season. The pinion gear and jackshaft looked fine. I keep my bike with a 2 year old HD battery on a tender in a heated garage for the Michigan winter. About the 10th engine start of 2011 the starter remained engaged and cranking the engine over until the battery went dead. During this frantic moment that seemed like forever, I turned off ignition, power switch, and pushed in the solenoid overide on the starter and nothing could stop the starter from cranking over. I recharged the battery and cranked up and started just fine. It only did that one time. Since then the frequency of starer clash has been increasing from once in awhile to almost every time I start the engine. I give small taps to the start switch until I hear that it will mesh then I hold it down to crank it over. Even doing this check I still will get an occasional clash. Its like the starter motor begins spinning before the pinion has engaged into the ring gear. Before I rip it all down again I would like to hear from anyone that can offer some advice. Currently, I am using the stock (clean) battery cables and a newer battery. How should I check the battery to make sure it is strong enough to turn over this high output starter? I read something about replacing the "compensator" What exactly is that?
Anyway, please offer any advice or tips on what would cause this and tips to get it fixed.........bike down during quality ride season is a bummer.
