Question for engine gurus...
Got a question for you guys.
'99 RKC injected TC88
Getting rid of those tensioners, going Andrews 26's with gear drive. Gonna remove the heads also and have them cleaned up a little.
Here's where I'm at.
Got all the "extras" off the engine. The rocker box covers are off, and I was told that the engine needed to be set a #1 TDC. Okay....
Manual states each cylinder need to be TDC when releasing rocker assbly. Okay...
So, I started with #2 and removed #2 rockers assbly and pushrods. Set the engine up for #1 @ TDC (which is where I want to leave it)
Now I've got to thinking....
After I get the cam plate off, I need to check the runout on the crank to be sure it's in spec. Hell...ya gotta spin it to do that!!!
Do I take the rocker assbly off of #1, remove the camplate and do the runout check before taking the heads off?
How to find #1 TDC on COMPRESSION stroke if ya don't have the valves moving for refference?
Have I already screwed up?

Thanks for the reply.
Don't have any plans to remove the cylinders...savin' that for next time!
Question is...
To check the runout on the crank, guessing the cam plate must be removed...Correct? Then set up indicator and turn engine to do runout check.
If the camplate is removed, I don't have lifters moving...
How do you know when the #1 piston is @ TDC on COMPRESSION stroke?
Is there a mark or refference on the nose of the crank or supthin'?
Silly questions I know...Dis beez my first time in da VTwin!!
Thx

Dont worry about TDC as when you are installing the cams you will rotate the engine and you will be alining timing marks. Only reason for being at TDC when installing, removing rockers is so that they are under the least amount of tension possible. You can again find this by watching the lifters, when they are both fully down and th e piston is pretty much at the top, you are at or near TDC on the compression stroke. The more you work on it, the more this will make sense to you.
If using adjustable pushrods, again, you will just need to watch that the lifters are all the way down, or on the base of the cams before installing and adjusting.

Thanks for the pvc tip, picked some up on the way home.
Thanks for the replies...didn't mean to , just trying to be carefull and not tear up anything that's not going for machining.
Sorry for the interuption ...your all welcome to go back to your mega cube, asphalt rippin' discussions.
Who knows...maybe I'll be offering to drive half way cross country and line up against one of you fellers in a couple o' years.
