Default Cleaning out rust inside tank.

I found a product called Metal Rescue. Anyone have experience with this product? I need to clean rust out of an old gas tank and this stuff looks like it works well. Is there any other options for a DIY cleaning? And what do I need to use once its cleaned out to prevent flash rust?

Thanks.

I have used an automotive fuel tank liner from Bardhall which comes in a quart can after removing the rust. Lined a modified sporty tank in 00' and to this day it has not peeled at all. It is a red colored one step liner. Got it through Auto Supply co. for about $15.00 enough to do two or three tanks. I've always used it to line any tanks that have been modified, stretched or built from scratch. Really good stuff!

Whatever happened to the ol' "Tank Seal" we used many years ago? That stuff was great - like a rubber membrane. We'd put gravel in the tank with diesel fuel, then solvent, shaking it all around to clean it.

Sorry, I screwed up, the liner is from Damon Industries (800) 362-9850 and is called Red Kote. I dont know why Bardall was in my head. Call the toll free # and they can give you a local supplier, well worth trying.

Por-15

Cream pealed and made a mess.

I have used Por-15 in several applications. Buy all of the products. You can use shot inside of the tank and bounce them around or just take it to a radiator shop and have it blasted out. Pressure test than start with the metal prep or better still call up and tell them what you got.

Before coating:

Make sure you block all of the holes so you can clean out vents and make sure you protect the threads.

Put a plug in the filler so the whole tank is sealed. Tumble with coating inside than drain after a while.

Let it drain thoroughly than remove all plugs and than put a hair drier in the filler once the tank is finished draining. Let it run on low heat for several hours with your eye on the drier for safety.

I have done a few of my friends Kawasaki Triple 750 Mach IV along with my red FXR at the same time. Still spotless after several years.

Take your time and prep it right. Be prepared for a day's worth of fun. When done throw all out and do not forget the solvent they sell.
