Engine build cam question

Default Engine build cam question

Still figuring out my build with SE MCR heads, 1550 flat tops on 02 Road Glide. Have everything ready to go except the cams. I really like the looks of the Woods TW7 cam but cant get it for my older model TC. So now I have narrowed my choices down to the Head Quarters TC-575-HC or the Andrews TW54 I'm leaning towards the Andrews to save $$. Both look good by the numbers but was concerned by the 31 overlap on the TW54 as compared to the TC-575-HC which has 44 overlap. What effect if any will the lower 31 overlap have on the bike either good or bad. Has anyone heard anything negative about the TW54 cam, any reason why you wouldn't use it. My MCR heads allow up to .575 the TW54 goes to .555 so should be a good fit. The Head quarters go to .575 on intake so it would be at the limit. Looking at the Big Boyz calc I will be right at 10.04/1 static and 9.23/1 corrected at 191 CCP if I use .30 HG, zero decking and 78 cc chambers. Numbers looked good but I'm a power junkie so which cam will give me most bang for the buck?

Any guesses on HP and torque numbers? I will be running a S&S Super G with enlarged intake and Thunderslide plus D&D Fatcats, Crane ignition.

well, the HQ cam will build more cylinder pressure, which equals more torque, so if big torque and midrange is the goal then the HQ cam is the ticket.

Having no exp. with that Andrews cam i cant say how strong it will be down low, should be fine im guessing.

the only thing i dont like about your combo is the size of the S$S carb, and E would be more than enough, a Woods tricked out CV would be the hot ticket.

#s should be like 100-105 HP and 108-110 torque...IMO

You can get that Wood cam if you do the roller chain conversion. Of course that will be extra $$

I got the new S&S Super G carb in a bunch of stuff I bought as a package. I know its a bit big but I will probably use it so I don’t have to buy another. I also got a SE258 cam in the stuff I bought but it would need a bunch more compression to work good. I actually thought about using that cam and going with the SE HC forged pistons instead but that combo along with the small chambers on the SE MCR heads (76-79CC) gets it up into the 11.0:1 static compression which may be a bit high for a bagger, still a thought though.

Either of the cams you suggest would work. The HQ 575 will give you more torque down low and really shines midrange and again adds some to the top end.

I have lots of experience with the HQ cams and you can't go wrong with that selection. I have not installed the Andrews in any builds so really can't comment on what the results would be..

The Super G is too much carb for your combination, no matter which cam you use. It will negatively impact low rpm power and rideability.
