Well..What do you guys think? Good Idea or just trouble?
Hey forum,
I have been getting alot of feed back from my question about porting my heads. So I called Binford cycles today to get a quote for the work. The guy from Binford told me he'll do what ever I want but he suggested this set up. They call it there HARD CORE 95". Total cost for parts and labor is 3750.00. With this set up he refered to it as the 120 club set up.(or something like that) Refering to the HP and TQ numbers this set up will get. What sucks is I just did the cams less than a 100 miles ago. Look forward to your responses. Wow!! all I wanted to do was port and flow the heads and look what happened...

Did he ask you about your riding style? Did he ask you if you ride 1-up or 2-up? Did he ask you what you want out of this build? Did he ask about where you want your power to come on? Did he ask you about your budget for this build? Or did he just listen to the parts that you have, and say "well, here's what you NEED..."
If it were me, and I wasn't looking for a fire-breathing build, I'd look to someone like maybe Big Boyz Cycles for an inexpensive street port job to make the heads flow better, and cc them so that they're equal in chamber volume (I say that because you already have everything else).

If your motor is currently at 95"/1550cc, you've already got 3-7/8" cylinders ....
Also, although it might just be a 'precautionary measure' ... there should be no need to replace ('upgrade') the cylinder studs if you're going to 10.5:1 CR ....
Interesting choice of SE head gasket ....
Concur with what Beau said in the post above ... was there a conversation about what you need ...?

Save your money; you probably won't see 120 numbers with the proposed build anyway, unless Binford has a "happy" dyno.
Your have the pipe and additional displacment already. The '06 heads flow very well but could benefit from some cleanup, bowl blending and decking for compression. Dump the 510 cam and go with Woods 6 or his new 555 or TMans 525 or 555 depending on riding style but choose the cam before you have the headwork done. You will be in the 100/100 neighborhood without cylinder studs, roller rockers and supports.
The 408G cam has a lift of .650 which is a radical chang in valve train geometry; it will be noisy. IMHO, you won't be happy with the results.
If you are seriously considering the Binford proposal, ask for references of customers that have that same build; talk to them, check out their bikes before you commit.

You really should have thought this through before buying those cams! Our bike engines and the good independent engine tuners are all a lot smarter than they used to be, even a few years ago. If you talk to a head porting specialist about having your heads done he is going to want you to get value for your money. He also he does NOT want you to mess up his good work by using the heads he slaved over with an unsuitable set-up.
There are several specialists here on HDF who can port your heads, but they also will offer you a 'kit', of heads with matched cams, pistons etc. It seems to be the way the trade is going, but has the benefit of providing a proven set-up and a serious increase in performance.
You should consider visiting Binford in person and ask to see dyno results, also talk through with them what you want to achieve.

I agree with DJL and Old G. The 408 is too much, you can count on noise, and I bet you'll not be happy. I've moved away from that cam. I concur, go to the t-man or Wood 6. I was real happy with the tw-5-6 in my previous 103.
