Default Oil pump gear confusion

I have recently put a Revtech oil pump on my 77 shovel FXE, haven't run the motor yet. When I was assembling the gears I noticed a dot on one tooth of each of the driving and idler gears on both sides of the pump. I am used to lining up a dot on a gear tooth to a dot on the mateing gear's tooth recess, but tooth to tooth is new to me. Does the dot just indicate which side of the gear is facing out from the pump body on both the scavanger and the supply sides?
