Default Butterflies over mild build

My 2001 Dyna runs so damn good with just stock 88 jugs, stock heads, stock carb, stock cam, S&S air cleaner, dynajet kit and SE slip-ons. I've been wanting to go to a aftermarket cam mostly to extend engine life by going geared, and also I've been wanting to change to a thunderheader because I just love the way they look and sound. I've already received the cam, which I went with the S&S 510G kit. I know I picked the right cam as I don't plan to get larger jugs or head work and it is highly recommended, but several times in the past I had a great running bike and I just kept fuking around with it till I screwed it up.

Pulling the trigger on a thunderheader tomorrow, and the lifters and adj pushrods. I just hope I don't regret it. Anyone else have this same 510G/thunderheader combo that can reassure me I'm not messing up? If so I'd love to hear it.

a friend of mine has that set up, he thought it was cool, until i ran him down one fine summer day.

When i bought my 95 kit with barrels, heads, cams. I just sat there looking at my bike for like a day...i was freaking out... then i thought just do it! man it sucked, just when i pulled the jugs it started to blow outside, storm moving in. all this dust and crap was blowing in the garage. im throwing towels the cases to keep the crap out. kinda sweat that out... it ended up OK.

I have the S&S 510g cams on my 02 RKC (Rush slip ons/Daytona Twin Tec fuel manager). I had them installed when I had my tensioners checked at 33k miles. The inner tensioner was worn completely through. The gear drive is great! Much better torque and no hesitation on accelerating. (never been dynoed), I was just able to tell once I rode my bike. Less gearing down when riding the mountain roads of N. GA. Also, since I plan on keeping the bike for a long time, I didn't want to have to worry about those POS tensioners later on down the line. I would say do it...I can't see you regretting it. The gear drive makes a little noise, but not really bad. I was running synthetic oil, but changed to dino and the gears sound much quiter now. Also during the summer I run one quart of Lucas oil stabilizer in place of one quart of 20w/50 Castrol during the hot summer months. Good luck.

Your bike will run just fine.

My brother has 510Gs in his carb'd, 88", '04 Heritage w/75k miles, and likes the way it runs.

I've got 6 buddies running the S&S 510G's.....2 in stock 88's, 2 in 95's, and 2 in 96's. They're all happy with the performance. 5 of the 6 are running power commanders, and 1 is carb'd.

Guys I dropped the bike off today to have the work done and the service manager is recommending an HSR42 to go along with the other modifications. Will this be a waste of money? Or will it be a noticeable improvement over the stock CV?

You offered me the same with my first carb rebuild. I have to say it is top notch and pretty much just unreal for someone to go out of their way, with no profit involved, to help someone on their own time.

I appreciated it, though I didn't need to call on you. Maybe next time, lmao.

Ended up not getting the carb because they were on backorder and didn't want to wait a month to get my bike back. Got it back today and it is fantastic. Revs freely to 5500 rpm - even more so than before - and runs like a banshee. I am thrilled! Even the tech went on and on over how impressive the bike runs and rides. He said it runs really strong for an 88, and for me to be sure and hang on good when I open her up. When I got on the highway, I see what he means. She'll really throw you back now.
