Default Need help on changing choke cable

My 97 fatboy choke **** broke, the plastic cracked in 2 pieces. I am trying to figure out how to remove the old cable from the carb. I don't have a manual as of yet for the bike. Where do i start and what needs to be removed to do this job?

Thanks

I noticed that Harley makes a chrome choke ****. Wonder if you could just replace the ****. If not and no one else responds, I'll look in my service manual tonight. The last time I messed with the choke cable, I think I pulled the carb off to get to the linkage.

Mike,

Looking at the diagram in the service manual, it doesn't appear that the carburetor has to be removed to replace the enricher cable. If you can reach it, it should unscrew from the rear of the carburetor. There is a spring and valve between the nut and the carb.

If the enricher is hard to operate, causing the break in the handle, you can adjust the tension with a nut that is located just below the ****.

Oldgeezer gave you some good info also lube the cable occasionally. Go ahead and get the manual, it's worth the money and will help you a lot in the future.

Im gonna try this again, dont know where my other reply went to. I had my carb off on my Heritage for some other problem and when I went to install the enricher cable I tightened the big ol nut just a bit too much. SNAP. I removed the carb once again and then unscrewed the plastic threaded fitting on the enricher assembly and took it off the carb. You will have to reuse the elbow, threaded fitting, spring and brass valve. Install the elbow, fitting, spring and brass valve onto the new cable and then screw it back into your carb. Remount carb, filter, etc., and when you get to the big nut on back of the enricher assembly, BE CAREFUL when tightening. I used my fingers and then went only about a eight of a turn. The cable was only like 12 bucks at the Harley place here. Hope this helps.

I have broken several the same way over the years. My 92 FLHS service manual says NOT to lube the cable. (I noticed this after I had lubed the cable and, as a result, the cable would not stay in any desired position.)
