Oil leaking around the valve stem because of loose fit or a loose guide and oil leaking around the guide and the press fit in the head.

White smoke all the time or just at deceleration.

White smoke when oil is pulled through the guides and blue smoke when oil is pulled past the rings.

Too much fuel and you get black smoke.

Had the same problem with my shovelhead. Builder did not replace worn guides. Had white smoke and oil in the intake manifold and the top of the pistons washed down by oil.

New properly fitted guides installed by a non lying builder and no more white smoke.

Good point, oil return in head could be leaking.
